Examples of Common Lawn Problems in Fairfield County

Problem:  Crabgrass

Development of crabgrass is progressive.   One or a combination of factors may lead to and promote the infiltration of crabgrass.  Examples of these factors include lack of maintainance, poor soil quality, compaction on busy lawn areas, and grubs.

Solutions:   Soil conditioners and addition of organic components and nutrients will enhance the soil quality. Fresh soil and aeration both mechanically and with humic acid supplements can repair compacted areas. Application of Milky Spore (St Gabriel Laboratories, Inc, http://milkyspore.com), which is organic and non-toxic to people and pets, is a preventative treatment for grub infestation caused by Japanese Beetles.  It works by destroying grub eggs before they hatch.  Milkyspore can be obtained online from http://HomeHarvest.com. Grubs also are a common cause of yellow, brown or bare patches in the lawn.

Application of anti-crabgrass herbicides is not always effective because the roots of established crabgrass can reach down 6-8 inches into the soil, and some crabgrass herbicides work only on pre-emergent crabgrass.

If there is a limited amount of crabgrass in the lawn a simple management technique is simply dig-it out, fill in the hole with fresh soil and grass seed.

Problem: Old Lawns

              Lawns age and get old.

Solution:  If your lawn is 10 - 15 years old consider having a new lawn installed.

Problem:  Soil pH

The soil pH in the Northeastern United States is often acidic.

Solution:  Periodic pH evaluations and treatment with pulverized lime is recommended, as needed.  Pulverized lime if available at garden centers or hardware stores.  Often treating the lawn in the late Autumn, just prior to Winter, allows adequate time for soil uptake in advance of Spring lawn green-up, planting, and growth.   Silk Tree Gardens can test your soil using rapid and low-cost methods.

Problem:  Clay versus sandy soil

An excess of either component will inhibit the development and growth of a healthy lawn.  Often newly built homes have soil that contains an excessive amount of clay soil due to digging and dumping the soil from the foundation area onto the future lawn space.

Solutions:  To test your soil, dig a 1/2 cup of soil out of the top 6-8 inches of your lawn. Dilute it with 2 cups of water in a transparent container and shake or stir-it up.  A few hours of soil particle settling should reveal two distinct layers of clay and sand.  An excess of either indicates a soil quality problem.  Various areas of your lawn can be tested this way to determine any differences in soil components.  Fresh soil, humic acid, and nutrient conditioners will refresh the soil.

Pet Owner Tip:  If your soil and lawn are maintained properly, your pets will have a negligible effect on the overall quality and appearance of the lawn.   If you have heavily utilized areas along fence posts or gates, grass seed can be planted with hay or straw overlay to protect the newly seeded area until the grass sprouts and develops.
