TREE AND SHRUB LANDSCAPING

Concepts:

  • Functionality: Windbreak, Shade, Reduce Noise, Privacy
  • Ornamental Value: Flowering Tree Types
  • Seasonal Color: Foliage and Flowers
  • Borders: Walkways, Driveways, Pool Settings, Patio
  • Dimensions: Tree Height, Shape, Spread; Tree Clusters
  • Wildlife Habitat: Attract Birds and Other Wildlife
  • Symmetry and Balance: Trees planted evenly spaced
  • Asymmetry:  Trees planted in a random style
  • Effect: woo
    dy, welcoming, formal, informal

Examples:

Functionality:

Privacy - Plant young evergreens at 4, 6, or 8 feet intervals;

Shade - Plants trees for shade during the hours of 8AM to Noon or Noon to 4 PM

Ornamental Value:

White, Pink, or Red Flowers, Duration of Flower Bloom

Seasonal Color:

Spring and Summer Flowers, Autumn foliage, Autumn and Winter berries, fruit or cones, Winter evergreen trees and evergreen shrubs

Establish Borders:

     Hedges, Shrubs, Small Trees

Hint - Hedge spacing, pruned plants maximum height 3 feet - space 15 inches; pruned plants greater than 3 ft in height space 18 to 20 inches; non pruned hedges space 2-3 times the spacing for pruned hedges,

Create Dimensions:

Tree Clusters - young trees of same type planted in same planting hole,     e. g., birch, aspen, maple or, separately, use various types of trees and shrubs based on tree height and spread, bark color, foliage and flowers.

Wildlife Habitat:

Berry, Fruit or Nut Trees - In addition to regular bird feeders, birds will have plenty to eat with berry, fruit and nut trees.  Also, it keeps squirrels happy, and maybe less of a problem for those concerned about squirrels at birdfeeders.

Symmetry and Balance:

Front or Back Entry/Porch - Similar trees and shrubs on each side of entry way, or  dissimilar tree and shrub types in an asymmetric landscaping style.  If you are planting shrubs under windows plan for maximum growth height, so the shrubs and trees do not block your windows, i. e., if you do not want your windows blocked.

Effect:

Overall effect or impression - What effect do you want to create for your gardenscape?  A manicured and formal landscape, or a relaxed and informal landcape.
