INTERNET BIRCH TREE SURVEY
(Independent Pilot Survey Initiated April 7, 2007):
This independent, pilot birch tree survey was created by Silk Tree Gardens in order to collect general data, using the internet as a tool, about the natural birch tree population in Connecticut. Although birch trees are more common in northern Connecticut, it appears that the birch tree population is much lower in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Silk Tree Gardens interest in the State's birch tree population began when an old and grand paper birch at Veterans' Park, Bridgeport, CT fell during the winter of 2000. The old tree was nearly 2 feet in diameter. Since then I have observed only a few other naturally occurring paper or white birch trees in the limited woodlands around the local area. Nearly all of these trees are in some form of decay with branches falling to the ground. In the future, the survey will be expanded to include other types of birch trees. Citizens, hikers, tree fans, outdoors adventurers, and others are invited to participate in the survey. If you are a golfer, perhaps you will notice white birch in the woodlands around the golf course and forward the information via the survey. Your participation is greatly appreciated!
