      "tulip tree" because of its tulip-flower shaped leaves. It is one of=
 the=20
      tallest (up to 120 feet!) and most distinctive eastern North America=
n=20
      hardwood trees. Its long, arrow-straight trunk, which may be two to =
three=20
      feet in diameter, reaches high up into a small, oblong crown of bran=
ches=20
      and foliage. These tall, straight trees stand like supporting pillar=
s for=20
      the very forest itself.</P>
      <P><FONT size=3D4><B><IMG height=3D76 alt=3D"Yellow poplar leaf" hsp=

      yellow poplar is dark gray and deeply furrowed into long, rough,=20
      interconnecting ridges that are separated by lighter gray fissures. =
The=20
      leaves are four to six inches in diameter with four lobes that are n=
otched=20
      into the rough "tulip-flower" shape. The leaves are attached to thei=
r=20
      twigs and branches by long (five to six inch) petioles which allow t=
he=20
      leaves to rotate very freely even in very light breezes.</P>

 poplar=20
      flowers in the early spring (late April to early May on the Nature T=
rail).=20
      The flowers are large, cup shaped and showy with six greenish-yellow=
 and=20
      orange petals. They are found at the ends of the leafy twigs high up=
 in=20
      the tree canopy (often you have to use binoculars to see them!). The=
se=20
      beautiful flowers are pollinated especially by honey bees. The fruit=
s=20
      which form from these pollinated flowers are cone-shaped masses of m=
any,=20
      one to one and a half inch, narrow winged samara (seeds plus 'wings'=
 to=20
      aid dispersal). These samara begin to be shed in the autumn and will=
=20
      continue to fall to the forest floor through the winter.</P>
      <P><FONT size=3D4><B>Seedlings</B></FONT><BR>Poplar seedlings that f=
orm from=20
      these samara do not grow well in the shaded conditions of the forest=
=20
      floor. When sunny gaps form in the canopy, however, these seedlings =
will=20
      grow at an incredible rate. It only takes fifty years, for example, =
for a=20
      yellow poplar to reach its maximum 120 foot height.</P>
      <P><FONT size=3D4><B>Poplar Wood and Longevity</B></FONT><BR>The sof=
t wood=20
      of the yellow poplar makes it very valuable tree for making furnitur=
e,=20
      toys and musical instruments but it also limits the longevity and su=
rvival=20
      of individual trees and contributes to a rapid cycle of sun gap form=
ation.=20
      Yellow poplar trunks are easily broken by strong winds. There are ma=
ny=20
      examples of broken and fallen yellow poplars all along the Nature Tr=
ail.=20
      This process of wind break opens up sunny, canopy gaps for new yello=
w=20
      poplar seedlings. A yellow poplar forest is in an almost continuous=
=20
      process of dynamic destruction and rapid re-growth.</P>
      <P>The yellow poplar is found most typically in mixed hardwood fores=
ts=20
      (intermixed with oaks, hickories, American beech, maples, black cher=
ry and=20
      basswood) but is also found in association with a number of conifers=
=20
      (including white pine and hemlock). The key to the persistence of th=
e=20
      yellow poplar in these forest associations is not the permanence of =
the=20
      individual trees, but rather the speed and robustness of its re-grow=
th and=20
